One of the joys (for me) of working in Christian Radio is the opportunity to look for great Christmas music to play for you. My husband doesn’t care to play Christmas music around the house until after Thanksgiving, so I love that I get to begin listening at work in early October!-)
Jason Gray’s Christmas Stories: Repeat the Sounding Joy’ was actually released in the fall of last year, but I was sent a copy by his record label a couple of weeks ago and gave it my first solid listen this morning as I was driving to the studio. And boy, am I excited to share it with you!
The problem with most albums, holiday or regular, is that there aren’t enough good songs on it to want to listen start to finish. I feel a lot of artists these days come up with 3-4 solid songs to submit to radio stations, and the rest is ‘filler.’ So I end up downloading my favorites on iTunes and ignoring the rest. But this album is different. While the artist features a handful of traditional tunes, the majority of the album is made up of thought-provoking original tunes.
My 25-minute commute to work this morning went something like this: Song one made me perk up and listen. By song four, I was thinking ‘wow, this may actually turn out to be one of those albums where I like EVERY SONG!’ And by song six, I was in tears. Jason Gray’s ability to speak truth in a musically moving way is uncanny. And it caused my heart to worship.
If you’re looking for an original take on Christmas – one that won’t burn you out by re-hashing too many old favorites but instead offers you fresh tunes – look no further. This is a must-have!
