Album Review – Lecrae’s Anomaly

I grew up listening to rap music. I am a Gen Y gal, the generation that truly began to embrace rap music from a young age. I have discussed with my husband, “What happens when we get older… are we still going to be listening to this?” I ask this mainly because of the risque reputation rap music has gained from its lyrics. This thinking is similar to the current popularity of getting a tattoo and then having that image with you on your body as an elderly person. Because these things are what is popular, they create the new norms. Most popular music on mainstream stations IS hip-hop/rap. There are now stations devoted only to the genre.

When I first came to Pulse 101.7FM, I was not hearing much rap. I talked with Rachel Leigh about this once and she shared a great point: when Christian rock music first began, it had a sound that was different than the mainstream version, making it less accessible. Today, Christian rock artists create music that is very comparable stylistically to that of the mainstream, bridging that gap. She said that until Christian rap music became comparable in sound to that of the mainstream rap artists, it would be difficult for those who did not only listen to Christian music to relate and fall in love with the sound.

anomalyTHE ALBUM

Lecrae has bridged this gap. His talent is immense. He creates music with similar beats and background music, and his talent of rapping and writing is easily at the same level of any mainstream rapper. BUT, he shares Truth… addressing relevant, important issues.

This album is raw. It is powerful. You can feel the emotion. Many of the songs are eye-opening, bringing awareness to issues that people face each day, but that we don’t always want to talk about. He even discusses the issue of mainstream rap music; what the artists are providing and what influence that can have on children of the current generation.

The last song on the album features Pulse 101.7FM artist For King and Country. It empowers and encourages the listener be a messenger of truth.  Make sure that YOU share this album with anyone who is a fan of the genre…and ask them to share it, too. Those who are not currently listening to Christian music will recognize his talent and be impacted by the message. I believe this album is the beginning of a new era in Christian rap. Lecrae is truly an “Anomaly.”

Charle’s Top 10 Slow Cooker Recipes

My absolute favorite kitchen appliance has got to be the slow cooker (a.k.a. the Crock Pot). How wonderful it is to be able to throw in some ingredients before you leave the house in the morning and arrive home to the delicious aromas of a fully cooked meal! If you’re wanting some foolproof, tested recipe ideas, here are my family’s Top 10 Favorites:

1. Slow Cooker Pork Carnitas with Zesty Slaw
These are two separate recipes from two different sites but the combination of the two is unbelievable… so flavor-packed! This is, by far, my favorite (and my husband’s) slow cooker recipe ever!

2. BBQ Pulled Pork
This is the easiest slow cooker recipe, nay, the easiest recipe-period-that I have ever made. Throw it on a bun and serve with a side of your favorite veggie for the perfect weeknight meal!

3. Buffalo Chicken Wraps
Almost as easy as the BBQ pork, this is a fun way to have your wings! 😉 I did add a little more cool, ranch dressing to mine before wrapping it up as the wing sauce is kickin’!

4. Crock Pot Sante Fe Chicken
The ingredients in this one remind me of making my own burrito bowl at my favorite fast food burrito joint!

5. French Dips
Here is another easy one! 🙂 Sometimes I add a bottle or can of beer if I have it on hand to make more au jus.

6. Chicken Tortilla Crock Pot Soup
Soup is such a perfect dinner option in fall and winter! Hint: This recipe can be made even easier by using leftover chicken or buying a rotisserie chicken that is already cooked. 🙂

7. French Onion Soup
I love this stuff and only ordered it at restaurants until I learned how easy it is to make.

8. Beef Stroganoff
Yum… a creamy, hearty meal served over noodles. This is a childhood favorite for many but making it in the slow cooker makes it even easier… who could ask for more?!

9. Homemade Crockpot Applesauce
Okay, so this isn’t dinner but I love the idea of making homemade applesauce – and in my favorite kitchen appliance, no less. 🙂

10. Slow Cooker Pizza Joes
This recipe combines sloppy joes with pizza. Kids will love this one!

Enjoy trying these out – and let me know your favorites!

Charle’s Favorite Fall Recipes

Fall is here! Time to pull out those great recipes for your favorite comfort foods – creamy, biscuit-topped casseroles…stuffed squash  – recipes with hearty ingredients. All this talk is making me hungry…let’s make some grub! Here are links to a few of my fave recipes this time of year:

Stuffed Acorn Squash
I found this recipe last year on one of my favorite blogger’s websites. I just used a 1 lb. roll of turkey sausage rather than the links, to make it easier. This one screams fall!

Skinny Tuna Casserole
Don’t let the title fool you… this recipe may have fewer calories but it’s super flavorful and delicious! I found this while looking for a recipe that didn’t use creamed soup. This is not-yo-mama’s tuna casserole – you are going to love it!

Shepard’s Pie
Who doesn’t love a good Shepard’s Pie?! This one has great flavor in the filling. It suggests making “healthified” mashed potatoes for the topping but I must admit, when on a time limit, I’ve used Idahoan instant mashed potatoes. I usually don’t like instant potatoes but I found these and have been enjoying mashed potatoes as a frequent side dish ever since!

Chicken Broccoli Casserole
This recipe is a favorite of mine from childhood. The curry adds just a hint of distinct flavor that makes it memorable.

Artichoke Mushroom Pie
It’s amazing what you can find on the internet! This one was another favorite from childhood (I was not a picky eater as a child ;)) I loved it so much, I asked my mom to share it in my elementary school cookbook.

I hope you and your family enjoy these recipes for years to come! Happy eating and making memories at the dinner table 🙂
